Start with permission, not the address form
Long-term residence and work depend on the exact national authorization. The route may be based on employment, study, family, remote work or another category, each with its own rules. Confirm the current category with Spain’s migration authority or consulate before travelling.
NIE, TIE and Padrón answer different questions
A NIE is an identification number. A TIE is a foreigner identity card used in cases where the permit route requires one. The Padrón records your habitual municipal address. Do not use one as proof that replaces another procedure.
An existing EU residence card may not transfer
A permit from another EU country generally does not create an automatic right to settle or work in Spain. Some EU mobility or family routes can apply, so confirm your status and sponsor’s situation with the relevant authority.
If you are joining an EU-citizen family member
A non-EU family member may have an EU free-movement route when joining an EU citizen who moves to another Member State. If the EU citizen is moving to their own country, national rules may apply instead. Check the family guide and ask the destination authority which route fits your facts.
Common questions
Can I move to Spain on a tourist visa and apply later?
That depends on the national route. Check before travel whether you must apply through a consulate or are allowed to apply in Spain.
Does the Padrón give me legal residence?
No. It records your usual municipal address. Immigration authorization is a separate process.
Is a NIE the same as a TIE?
No. A NIE is an identification number; a TIE is an identity card issued when the applicable residence procedure requires it. Neither term alone describes every residence route.
